Y'all are so good at advice, so I have another question for you. This time it has to do with kitchen countertops. I know I went on and on about laminate counters and I still might go that route, but several people have suggested I look into quartz. Apparently it's not a lot more expensive than laminate. Laminate has gone up in price over the years, especially when you add the ogee edge like we want.
A friend of mine, Kendra at Joy in Our Home Blog explained to me that they were able to get quartz for only $300 more than laminate. That really got me thinking. :)
So, do any of you have quartz? Do you like it? How do you clean it? Do you just use soap and water and a paper towel to wipe it down? I've been reading up on it and here's a quote...
"Engineered Quartz is a manmade product created mostly from natural materials. It's made of 90-94% ground quartz and 6-10% resins and pigments that are combined into durable and nonporous slabs. It's naturally resistant to abrasion, scratches, dents and acids, without the need for sealants. It's also non-toxic and nonallergenic and will last a lifetime."

ReplyDeleteI love the look of quartz too but have never had it. You asked me on my blog so I'll share, we have granite. It's gorgeous and wasn't the expensive grade. They call it Dallas White - we love it! I'm not sure how the cost compares to laminate. It's very easy to care for.

ReplyDeleteI have granite at this house in the city, and Silestone at the lake. I wanted Soapstone as I liked the darker, muted colors, but that's just me. On the granite I've used cleaner and polish, and it doesn't do anything for me. I use a natural citrus base cleaner every few days...other then that, just a wet washcloth. Every other week I use Lysol Kitchen Spray to kill bacteria. The same on the Silestone.
The only reason I didn't like granite was that the patterns were too busy for me. As far as laminate, I've heard it's come a long way. Best of luck!

Well, I've had about every type of counter top in my 8 or 10 houses! I do have a Quartz at the lake in all of the bathrooms and laundry room and granite in the kitchen both home and the lake. I care for the Quartz the same way I do the granite. In the kitchen I use soap and water and occasionally some granite spray. In bathrooms a general all,purpose,cleaner - I think Mrs. Myers. My home granite is polished and patterned and 10 years old and looks like new. Just about everything has been spilled on it - the only thing you can't use is vinegar based cleaners. My lake granite is honed and solid color but only 18 months old as is the Quartz. I do love both of my choices at the lake. Both are solid color. Ogee edge is more expensive on those surfaces too. Best of luck - it's hard to decide with so many choices. I do know if you're planning to move any time soon, Quartz or granite will be a better choice for resale. But on the other hand, I always think choose what you really love - you have to look at it and care for it!!
