Decorating Tips and Tricks Part 1

Hello everyone! I thought I'd share a few decorating tips and tricks with y'all today. Now, I'm by no means even close to what you'd call a "decorator." I'm sure professional decorators would look at my house and think "well...she needs some help." Ha! But I have learned a few tricks for the casual decorators out there. Maybe that's what I am... a casual decorator. Lol!

See this basket just sitting there looking pretty? Well, it actually has a purpose...

The blanket is covering up some cables in the back of the armoire. I couldn't stand for those cables to be showing and this little trick took care of that for me. :)

The blanket folds over the cables and helps to hide them.

I think I may have shared this one before, but if you're new here, you might appreciate it. This lamp cord is black, which kind of matches the table. So, I just taped it to the table leg so it wouldn't show. In real life, the tape doesn't show up as much as it does in these pics.

The problem was that after it hit the floor, it stood out like a sore thumb on the light colored carpet. So, I painted the little section that goes from the base of the table to under the sofa. Problem solved. :)

Here's how it looks from a distance. Can't really see the cord, can you?

Here's our faux wainscoting in the dining room. This was done pre-blogging, so I don't have pics, but basically we just painted the bottom half of the wall in a semi gloss white. Then we made those little boxes out of wood and nailed them up and painted them too.

Here's a closer look. If you get close, you can see the texturing on the walls and you'll know we didn't do "real" wainscoting.

I'm really happy with how it turned out and it was a lot cheaper and easier to do it this way.

how to fake wainscoting

I think you all know by now how much I hate cords showing. Well, I have this lamp in my kitchen. See that plate? Its sole purpose is covering up the lamp cord.

creative ways to hide cords

See? I just gathered the extra cord and tucked it under the easel.

Here's another easy update for the windows. We kind of faked the window casing.

adding window casing to existing window

We just painted the insides of the windows with a semi gloss white paint, then put trim around the windows and also on top.

We put a larger piece of trim on top to finish it off.

We also did the same thing in the dining room (shown below), living room, and kitchen.

Well, I hope y'all got some good tips/ideas here. Stay tuned for part 2 of my tips and tricks coming soon. :)

What tips and tricks do you use in your home?

I recently got a new chair for the living room and I'll share that this week too. I found a couple of chairs I liked and put up a poll on Instagram for people to vote on which one they liked best. I bought the one they voted on, but then saw another one I liked even more. It's literally been like musical chairs around here. :)

  1. Great ideas! I go to great lengths to cover cords too. If I can't hide them completely they wear cord covers made from fabric that coordinates with the room. Absolutely love the trim you've added around the windows.

  4. Those are some great tips! I hate lamp cords too. I bet someday someone is going to invent something else so we never have to deal with them again!

  5. I love your tips, especially the basket in front of the cords. You have such a great eye for detail. Usually I don't notice things until I see them in pictures! lol! Love the wainscoting...may try that when I redo the den this fall.

    Thanks, Lisa!

  6. Love these tips, Lisa! Who cares what "professional" decorators think... Your style is fabulous!! With the world of blogging becoming so big, I realize all the more it's women like you and many others that I follow that have extremely great taste! Love the basket with the chalkboard sign... Saw it at target!

    1. You are so sweet, Kendra!! Thank you!! :) I've kind of gotten a little more relaxed and comfortable with my style. I try not to obsess over whether it's the "correct" way to decorate. If I like it, I tend to just go with it. Guess I'm getting rather daring in my old age. :)
