Cozy Mystery Books

I love to read. My favorite books to read are "cozy mysteries." I once read a definition of what a "cozy mystery" is. It said "A cozy mystery usually takes place in a quaint little town with everyday characters. You can easily see these characters as your friends and neighbors. There's always a mystery going on, but it's usually not too scary and generally free of gore." I have to agree with this description. The type of cozy I like usually talks about family and kids and everyday life and there's usually a few recipes included. :)

This may sound weird, but I love books where the characters talk about their daily routines like driving the kids to school, grocery shopping, cleaning house, cooking, etc. Maybe it's because that's the stage of life I'm in right now. :) Most cozy mysteries incorporate these things into the story.

I thought I'd put together a list of a few of my favorite cozy mysteries out there. I put a link below each pic where you can find out more about each of these books. I'd probably just confuse you if I tried to explain what each one was about. :) There are also a couple of links at the bottom of the page where you can find more info about cozy mysteries.

God bless Anne George! She's the one that got me hooked on cozy mysteries. Her "Southern Sisters Mysteries" are a fantastic read. It's about a couple of 60 year old sisters in the south that are always getting into one mess or another. Now, you might think "I'm too young to enjoy a series about 60 year old women." Well, let me tell you, they'll have you laughing in no time! I've read the whole series (all 8 books) three times.

The  "Miss Zukas Mysteries" by Jo Dereske.

The "Fresh Baked Mysteries" by Livia J. Washburn

The "Gray Whale Inn Mysteries" by Karen MacInerney

The "Domestic Diva Series" by Krista Davis

Here are some more I love:

1. The "Jane Jeffry" books by Jill Churchill
2. The "Lucy Stone" mysteries by Leslie Meier
3. The "Yellow Rose Mysteries" by Leann Sweeney
4. The "Cats In Trouble Mysteries" by Leann Sweeney
5. The "Candy Shop Mysteries" by Sammi Carter
6. The "Hannah Swensen" mysteries by Joanne Fluke

*I love the Leann Sweeney books because the author lives in Texas. :) And they're really good books!

Here are some sites that are really helpful when looking for a particular book or book series:

I hope you found something new to read. Be sure to tell me about your favorite books too!

  1. I've never heard the name for that genre type but I like them too. Love it when there's a bed and breakfast, or a sweet love story, or some pretty house involved. :)

Did you read the Southern Sisters murder mysteries by Anne George? That's how I found out about Sister Schubert's rolls years go. If you haven't read them I sure you'll love them.

  2. I've never heard of "Cozy Mysteries." They sound very interesting, and I think I've read a few that probably would fit into that category. I love to read, and The Man and I took the TV out of our bedroom several months ago and enjoy reading before we fall asleep. We are currently reading a series (he's a couple of books ahead of me) by Diana Gabaldon called "Outlander." They are so good. I have a Pinterest board for book recommendations, so I'll be adding your "Cozy Mysteries" to my list.

    1. Hi Tina! I think you'll like any of these books. They are all great, but I'm partial to the Southern Sister ones because that's where my love for cozies started. :) Let me know if you read any of these or if you have any recommendations for me. I love to hear about a new cozy series. Enjoy your week!

  5. Lisa, I just love these kind of books, too! I don't sleep well after reading graphic murder mysteries. Have you ever read the Lucy Valentine series by Heather Webber? She also wrote the Nina Quinn mystery series. You will LOVE these books, I ate them up. You can find them on Amazon. I have to check out your suggestions!

  6. I LOVE to read British cozies!! My favorite series are The Agatha Raisin mysteries and the Hamish Macbeth mysteries series both by M.C. Beaton and the Lois Meade Mystery series by Ann Purser. I am going to check out the books you've listed! Yay, new books to check out from the library! Oh yeah, I just started a new series called the Booktown mysteries by Lorna Barrett. I liked it, but didn't love it as much as the others.

  7. Those kinds of books sound great! I'm not a huge book reader, but something like that sounds like something I would enjoy. Thanks for sharing some of your favorites and where to find them.

  8. That's funny I've never heard the term 'cozy mysteries' but I love a good mystery. I especially like ones set in England and Ireland. I've read all of Maeve Binchy's books, love ones with quirky characters in small, quaint towns. I always feel such a kinship with someone who love books. :)

  10. I enjoy this type of mystery ~ thanks so much for the recommendations! I can't do the graphic, violent books or TV/Movies. I think our world has too much of the violence available to young kids.

I'm going to look up some of these right now!

  11. Well, I tried to leave a comment...then Blogger required me to sign in again and now the comment seems to be lost. :/

Anyway, thanks so much for these recommendations! I love mysteries like this...not violent or graphic. I just read that Anne George passed away in 2001 due to complications from heart surgery. Sad ~

    Will look for more!
