Foyer Basket and Dining Room Sideboard

Hi there! I thought I'd show y'all how I changed up my wicker basket on the entry table. The last time you saw it, it probably looked like THIS

After all the holidays, I knew I'd want to fill it with some hydrangeas for my everyday decor.

BTW, these pics were all taken before we painted. Everything is so much lighter now and I can't wait to show you the big paint reveal. :)

I went to Michael's to price the hydrangeas and they were around $6.99 each. I knew if I waited, they'd go on sale. Just one week later, they were on sale 40% off! I hurried down there and picked up lots of them.

I just snipped off the stems and arranged them in the basket. Easy peasy.

I really like the neutral colors.

You can see below how I took some things off my dining room buffet too. I like the clean, uncluttered look now. I actually have a question for y'all...is this called a "buffet" or a "sideboard" or is either name fine? I never know what to call this. When we bought it at the antique store, the tag said "buffet" but I've always heard them referred to as a "sideboard." Let me know your thoughts on this, please. :)

Almost every time I show a pic of my floors, I get an email asking what I clean them with. This is what I use. You can get Bona products at almost every grocery store and also on Amazon. When we had our hardwoods installed, they gave us some of this and told us to "never, ever clean them with anything else" so this is the only thing we use.

I also thought I'd show y'all what's inside my buffet (sideboard) drawers. In this drawer, I keep napkin rings, candle holders, tablecloths, napkins, and some ribbon for my napkin rings. You can see HERE how I use the ribbon on the napkin rings for different holidays, etc.

In this drawer I keep my green napkins. I have lots and lots of them. :)

In this drawer I keep some bowls, holiday napkins, table runners, and serving platters.

Also in that drawer, there are some instructions for cleaning my tablecloths, etc. I like to keep some of the tags from the items I buy so I'll remember how to clean them, or what sizes they come in, etc.

In this bottom drawer, there are more platters, trays, a set of dollar tree plates, and our "cookies for Santa" plate and cup that were purchased from the J.C. Penney catalog about 20 years ago. :)

Where do y'all store all your serving pieces?

I'll be back Friday with an amazing Tomato Basil Soup recipe. It's so, so easy and very delicious!

  1. It all looks so nice and fresh for this new year, Lisa. I like the uncluttered look, too, after Christmas and I LOVE hydrangeas.

It is interesting you asked about sideboard and buffet because my friend and I had this conversation the other day. She has been a dealer for years. She said the two are basically interchangeable terms. However, a sideboard was basically a longer piece and was used for storage (before built in kitchen cabinets) where a buffet was usually created specifically to be used as a dining room piece/server. If a sideboard was used in a dining room it was usually referred to as a buffet...BUT if that piece was used in the living room it was called a sideboard. Also, you can throw credenza in the mix....lol Credenza used to not have legs until they were "modernized" and they usually have/had sliding doors in the front- kind of like an old TV cabinet.

Bet that is more than you ever wanted to know- lol xo Diana

  2. I love the hydrangeas arranged in the basket. That chest in your dining room is wonderful storage. I'm sure that comes in handy when you're setting the table.

  3. The hydrangeas look so pretty in the basket.....love the touch of spring. I have always heard of serving pieces in the dining room referred to as a sideboard but you know, maybe it is a regional thing? LOL!!! My serving pieces are stored in the kitchen.....

  5. Hydrangeas are my favorite! I like that wreath also...the perfect welcoming entry! I don't have a clue about the official term of the furniture. I always call mine a buffet...but I also sometimes refer to my purse as a "pocketbook" and my hubby makes fun of me and calls me an old lady. Not really sure what that has to do with anything...haha!

    1. That's too funny...I always call mine a "purse" but my friend calls it a "pocketbook" and another friend calls it a "handbag." My hubby sometimes calls my wallet a pocketbook. :) I guess "wallet" does seem kind of manly. Lol! Kind of like the whole "sofa" vs. "couch" debacle. Ha! I love hydrangeas too...just wish they would grow here. :)

  6. What a great deal on the hydrangeas...they look so pretty in the basket. Not sure about the proper name for the buffet/sideboard...same thing, maybe? :)

My daughter swears by Bona on her floors. I have to try it, your floors are beautiful!

  7. Love the way you displayed the flowers ~ love them! Everything looks so pretty. I'll have to try that Bona...did not even know it existed. :) I haven't had hardwoods until I moved here. Thanks so much for sharing!

  9. Lovely way to display those hydrangeas -- they look so pretty! Your floors are gorgeous! That's a clever way to store your linens and table ware. I have a bunch of tablecloths and tablerunners hanging in my guest room closet -- less likely that they will need pressing when I'm ready to use them!

  10. Lisa...I feel so much better knowing that I'm not the only one who saves the cardboard labels and tags that come with my tablecloths, etc. It sure is hard to remember the sizes and other info and so it really helps. Your buffet is lovely and simple and obviously ready to serve that Valentine's cake!!

As a co-host of Project Inspire{d}, I'd love to invite you to link up your inspiring posts at our link party. We go live each Monday night at 8 ET and close on Friday at 8 AM - at AnExtraordinaryDay.net. Hope to see you there!!
