Fashion Post?

I'm cracking up with that title, hence the question mark. I'm definitely NOT a fashion blogger. Not even close. My closet is filled with mostly yoga pants, t-shirts, and flip flops. But I did find a few things I've been looking for lately (clothes-wise) and thought I'd share. The three things I'll be talking about today are Capris, Pixie Pants, and Camisoles.

First up is the capri pants. I know, I know...they're probably not even in style anymore, but I really don't care. They're a nice alternative to shorts and great for wearing around the house or for quick trips. I've never really followed big fashion trends anyway...big surprise. Ha!

My main problem with pants these days is that I don't like all the low rise trends. I mean...like I hate low rise pants. They are far too low for this 40 something mom and they just keep falling down on me.

Do you know how hard it is to find something that ISN'T low rise??? I mean, I don't want total "mom jeans" but would it be too much to ask that I don't put on a show every time I bend over? Lol!

Well, I found them and I'm here to share with you. You're welcome. :)

I was browsing the Sunday paper recently and came across the Sears ad. Okay, I just lost a few of you, didn't I? You're like "Sears??? Really???" I know. I was just as surprised, but they showed some capris in their ad and they looked like they would work and wouldn't be too low.

So off to Sears I went. Here's where I might lose a few more of you...they are Gloria Vanderbilt brand. I know! I haven't worn those since I was in 6th grade in the 80's. Remember her famous signature on the back pocket? I once heard Anderson Cooper (who's just a few years older than me) say he was mortified when all the girls in his class wore jeans with his mom's name across their bums. Ha ha!

For those of you too young to remember the Gloria Vanderbilt craze of the 80's, she designed some blue jeans that were all the rage. They all had different color stitching down the outside of the leg and they had the famous swan stitched on the front pocket. And of course, her signature on the back pocket.

I honestly didn't even know Gloria Vanderbilt still had a clothes line, but she does. And don't worry...they don't have her name across the back pocket anymore, or anywhere else that's visible.

They're called the Jordyn Embellished Capri and here's a link to them at Sears:

And here's a (slightly fuzzy) pic from the Sears website:

The pic makes them look pretty short, but they're not that short on me and I'm 5'7". I think Kohl's also carries them, just so you know.

Sears constantly has them on sale, so you can usually get them for just under $25. I got them in three colors (rinse wash, brown and vanilla)

I will say that the vanilla (khaki) ones seem to run a bit big. I ended up returning them for a smaller size than the other colors.

Here's the deal...They AREN'T low rise. They DON'T fall down as you walk around. And you're NOT constantly having to pull them up AND they hit at your natural waist, NOT way down low on your hips. Love that!

Oh, and here's why they call them an "embellished" capri...

See the little bling on the back pockets? Cute, huh?

Next up is the famous Old Navy Pixie Pants. I cannot say enough about these! I love them!!! I heard about them from two sources recently. One was Jennifer at Dimples and Tangles and the other was a sweet Instagram friend @stylishschoolteacher. Y'all really should follow both these ladies on IG. The Stylish School Teacher posts her outfits almost daily and I love her style. Every one of her outfits is something I would totally wear. Which is probably slightly weird since I'm pretty sure I'm old enough to be her mom. :)

So, here's a link to the Pixie Pants at Old Navy:

And here's a pic from the Old Navy site:

Now, be sure you're looking at the "Pixie mid-rise ankle pants" and NOT the "Pixie CHINOS." I have no experience with the Pixie Chinos, so I can't vouch for them.

Everyone seems to love these pants, so I just had to see for myself. I just happened to go to the Old Navy site to have a look and imagine my surprise when I saw they were having a 24 hr. sale and they were 40% off!!! (Apparently they're on sale all the time) As if that didn't seal the deal, I started reading reviews. When I came across one that basically said "They say these are mid-rise...wrong! They should call these 'grandma rise' because they are so high!" I was like "Sold!!!" Hee hee! Y'all...I was so happy to hear these WEREN'T low rise! I know that may turn off many of you, but I was totally happy that they were a higher rise. :) Plus, I haven't worn anything tucked in for...well...as long as I can remember, so nobody sees how high my pants really are anyway. Ha!

They are regularly about $35, but with the sale, I got them for $21! I wasn't sure of the size, so I ordered four colors in three different sizes each! So, yes, I had TWELVE pixie pants delivered to my door. Ha ha!

They do stretch a bit, so if they're a little snug, don't worry. They are kind of like a legging, but not that tight fitting. These pants are so comfy! It's like wearing pajamas all day long. Just like the Jordyn capris, they're not low rise (they come to just under my belly button) they don't fall down, and you're not constantly having to tug and pull them up.

They come in lots of colors AND patterns. I was a little too chicken to order any patterns, so I stuck with solids. I ordered Life's a Peach (pictured above, love that name!) Robbie Red (which is very daring in my little fashion world) Black, and Rolled Oats. I really want to try the Black/Silver Houndstooth next. Gasp!

Now for the camisoles. I have been on a mission lately
(actually for about 6 months now) to find an old school cami. You know, like the ones we used to have years ago that are made of a silky material and loose fitting. Well, all I have been able to find are micro fiber ones (or tank tops) that are very clingy or basically what amounts to a Spanx product. No thanks.

It's so hot here that the last thing I want is another layer of something clinging to my skin in the summer. I searched high and low and finally found them at...drum roll please...Kmart. Yup. I couldn't believe it myself. Here's a link:

And here's a pic from the Kmart site:

This is exactly what I've been looking for. It's silky, soft material doesn't cling to your skin at all. It's loose fitting and runs about $8. What a great price! I haven't been inside a Kmart for probably 20 years, but when I did a search online, this one kept coming up, so I clicked over and fell in love. :)

I ordered it in white and black and it's just perfect. You know how you have those shirts that you're like "Hmm...I wonder if this is a little see through...maybe I need to wear a cami under this?" Yep, this fits the bill and you won't even know it's under there. Have y'all figured out by now that I'm all about comfort? Always have been. :)

Oh, and before I go, remember the maxi skirt I talked about HERE? So soft and made of t-shirt material. Remember...comfy. ;) Well, I finally got the Walmart link to work, so here's the link to the $10 shirred maxi skirt that comes in all kinds of colors and patterns:

And here's a pic from the Walmart site:

Okay, you probably won't see another "fashion post" from me for awhile. I'm all stocked up on clothes now, so I'll be back to my regular decor posts soon...just after I order that skirt in yellow. ;) Oh, and I just ordered some cute summer shoes I'll share with you soon. You won't believe how inexpensive they were. But after that, I'll be done shopping for awhile. I think. ;)

Y'all have a good day!

Nana's Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Y'all are in for a real treat today (literally.) I cleared it with my mom and she granted me permission to share my great grandmother's chocolate chip cookie recipe with you, just in time for Memorial Day.

Now I know there are probably similar recipes out there (there's only so much you can do with a standard chocolate chip cookie recipe) but this one has been in our family for probably over 100 years. :)

The cookies are VERY thin, chewy, but still crisp, and oh so good!

Everyone always says "Are they supposed to look like that?" and yes, they are supposed to be that thin. That's one of the reasons I love them so much. I tend to like things thin...cookies, pizza, etc.

I'm a pretty messy baker, as seen below...

My hubby bought those blue measuring cups when he moved down here from Montana waaaay back in '88. We got married in 1990 and I still use them to this day.

Please take note of my new (i.e. clean) cookie sheets. I'm finally not embarrassed to show my cookie sheets. Ha! BTW, I picked up this new set of three cookie sheets in varying sizes for about $6 at Walmart.

Here they are straight out of the oven...

I took this close up to show how thin they are...

And now I present to you "Nana's Chocolate Chip Cookie" recipe:

1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups chocolate chips

Pre-heat oven to 325 and line cookie sheets with parchment.
Cream butter, sugar, and brown sugar. Stir in eggs and vanilla. Add flour, salt, and baking soda to creamed mixture. Mix in chocolate chips. Drop by spoonful on cookie sheets and bake 10-15 minutes.

Here are some of my personal notes...

I use my Kitchenaid to mix this up, then add the chocolate chips by hand. I also use a cookie scoop (pictured below) that holds 2 teaspoons, so this makes about 70 cookies for me.

I bake them for 12 minutes, then let them cool for 3 minutes before removing them from pans with sharp metal spatula. I cool them on cooling racks, then store in an airtight container. These freeze very well too.

Here's the cookie scoop I use...

Let me know if y'all make these. They are so yummy! Do y'all have plans for Memorial Day? Ours revolves around food...brisket, corn on the cob, and watermelon. Yum!

This and That and a New Truck

Hello there! So, I mentioned awhile back that my oldest son is about to graduate college (in December) and he was fortunate enough to secure a job already. Now that he's making "real money" he wanted to reward himself with a new truck.

The dealership didn't have exactly what he wanted in their inventory, so he custom ordered one. We've never ordered a vehicle before, but it was the neatest experience. He basically placed an order with every little thing he wanted on his truck. He was able to completely build it from the ground up with all the accessories he wanted. In just four short weeks, they delivered it.

And here she is...

It's a 2016 Ford F-150 XLT Super Crew and he's thrilled with it! I can't believe how much room there is. He's so high up too. He can see so much better than when in his car.

We're so happy for him. He's done so well in college and we are so glad he has a job that he loves. :)

What's funny is that we're a Honda family...like hard core Honda. We've only bought Honda vehicles for the past 15 years. We've been so pleased with them and they last forever. Anyway, I've been thinking that I should get a smaller SUV for my next vehicle. So, when we were at the Ford dealership, I started looking around.

I noticed the Escape Titanium and really liked it! I won't be in the market for another new car for a couple more years, but I'm going to keep that one in mind. Do any of you drive the Ford Escape Titanium? Maybe it's time to branch out a bit and try something new. :)

Now let's talk food...I used to buy Hot pockets for my boys to have as a quick lunch. Then I came across these in the frozen aisle...

(And no, this is NOT a sponsored post) They're called Better Bakery Artisan Melts. They're about $3 a box and there are two in each box. My boys and hubby LOVE them! They say they are like glorified Hot Pockets, or "fancy" Hot Pockets. Lol!

I finally tried one the other day and they were right. It was so good! The bread is very soft and has lots of seasonings in it. There is a lot of filling as well. I just happened to have all the current flavors in my freezer at the time, so I took pics of each for you...

Have y'all tried them? Let me know if you're a fan like me. :)

I posted this on IG the other day...

This is one of my favorite spots for curling up with a good book (or rather, my Kindle) and reading the entire afternoon. The only thing is that it's one of Holly's favorite places too, so we have to fight over it sometimes. Ha!

Oh, and speaking of books, I've been reading a new-to-me cozy mystery series. It's called the "Frosted Love Cozy Mysteries" by Carol Durand and Summer Prescott. It sounds like a romance novel, but it's not. There's a little bit of romance, but mostly it's a good mystery without a lot of blood and guts.

I bought the first 10 books on Kindle (for only $6) and read them all within a couple of weeks. You can read a little about this series HERE

For more of my cozy mystery book recommendations, click HERE.

Hope y'all have a great day!

Flowers, Po Boys, and Skirts

I needed to replace my patio flowers (it was getting too hot for the snapdragons and impatients) so I made a quick trip to Home Depot and picked up these beauties for only $1.25 each...

Pentas have always done well in our heat and of course, Vincas are a staple in Texas.

Below is a moss rose on the table, but it's not blooming yet.

The miniature bottle brush bushes are starting another bloom cycle...

You can't really see it in the pic below, but the Lantana is still going strong in the front bed. I keep having to trim it back because it blocks the sidewalk.

After a busy day of shopping and planting flowers, I took the easy road and picked up Antone's po-boys for dinner. Have y'all ever had these? The chow chow is my favorite part!

Okay, here's the skirt I mentioned in my last post. These aren't great pics, but I wanted to show a full length pic and a close up. It's from Walmart and comes in lots of patterns and colors and it's only $10.00! My store doesn't carry them, so I had to order online.

It's made of t-shirt material, which is so soft and comfy! It's a maxi skirt, so it's long. I'm 5'7" and it comes to my ankles. In the pic below, you can see how it has a "shirred" waistband.

Once again, I'm having trouble with links to the Walmart website, but if you search "Faded Glory Maxi Skirt with Shirred Waistband" it should come up for you. It's one of their best sellers and I can see why. I love it! You could totally wear flip flops with it or dress it up with flats. Either way, I know you'll love it as much as I do. :)

My New "Mora" Clock, Cherry Chocolate Cake, and Garden Pics

I've had a love affair with Swedish Mora clocks for some time now, so imagine my surprise when Pamela From My Front Porch To Yours Blog posted one on Instagram for only $12.99! She got it at Kirkland's, so I immediately hightailed it down there and got my very own. Of course for that price, it's not an actual Mora clock, but I didn't care. It was close enough and had the look I was going for. So, here she is...

Isn't she pretty?

I love how she looks on our DIY rolling cart...

Okay, I mentioned the Chocolate Cherry Pecan Cake recipe a couple of days ago HERE. Well, I made it and it was delicious!

With the cinnamon, it reminds me of the Mexican Chocolate Sheet Cake. So yummy!

I finally got a chance to snap some pics of my Vitex trees in bloom...

The purple blooms are so vibrant and pretty!

Oh, and I also figured out the name of these pretties. I spotted it at Home Depot and a couple of nice readers also knew the name...it's Orange Bulbine. So, there you have it. :)

Apparently they're drought tolerant and perfect for xeriscaping if you're into that.

So, that's all for now. I'll be back soon with my new favorite and very comfy maxi skirt that comes in a billion colors for only $10 and some new flowers for the patio. I know, I know...you can't stand the excitement, huh? Lol!

A Great Deal and Two More Recipes

Just popping in with a few quick things...

First off, I know a lot of you missed out on the $11.99 Aldi patio cushions I talked about HERE so I wanted to share these I spotted at Walmart recently...

At $14.97, they're only a few more dollars than the Aldi ones and they have lots of patterns to choose from.

Awhile back, I posted the Chick fil A coleslaw recipe. (click  HERE to see it) For those of you that aren't aware, they discontinued it and the general public was pretty upset about it, so they gave out their secret recipe to placate everyone. I finally made it the other day and it was a hit!

Okay, I have to talk about this coffee...it's the "Houston Blend" from HEB and it's so good! As you can see on the label, it has real coconut flakes in it. Here's the description..."a combination of praline and Texas pecan flavoring, along with real coconut flakes." So good! If you're not local, you can still purchase it online HERE. I love that HEB sells items online now.

Speaking of HEB, they recently posted this recipe for Cherry Chocolate Pecan Cake...

Doesn't that sound amazing? I actually have this baking in my oven as we speak. I'll let you know how it turns out. :)

Mother's Day Treats and a Few Recipes

We celebrated Mother's Day and my mom's birthday this past weekend. I thought I'd share our little table of snacks and a little box of treats I made up for my aunt and mom to take home with them.

Yes, those plates and napkins say "princess." I thought my mom would like that for her birthday plates, and she did. ;)

We snacked on quiche, strawberries with fruit dip, Pam's pimiento cheese, shrimp dip, and lemon bars.

RECIPES:

FRUIT DIP: 8 oz. softened cream cheese mixed with one jar marshmallow cream. (I use a hand mixer to whip this up)

PAM'S PIMIENTO CHEESE: Purchased in the HEB deli. If you have an HEB nearby, this is the BEST pimiento cheese I've ever tasted and well worth the $7/lb. price. :)

SHRIMP DIP: This is my aunt's recipe...
16 oz. sour cream
One 0.4 oz. envelope Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing Mix
Two cans tiny shrimp, drained.

Mix the dressing mix with the sour cream and fold in the tiny shrimp. Might want to make the night before to let the flavors meld together. Serve with Ruffles potato chips and enjoy!

LEMON BARS: This recipe came from one of those recipe exchanges we used to do many years ago. Did y'all ever do that? A friend of mine started it and sent a recipe out and then we were all given addresses to send a recipe to. I got lots of good recipes from all over, but this one didn't come with a return address, so I have no way of giving credit where credit is due, but it's been my go-to lemon bar recipe for ages.

2 cups flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup butter
4 beaten eggs
2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Sift together flour and powdered sugar, cut in butter. Press in bottom of 9x13 pan and bake at 350 for 20-25 min.

When it comes out of the oven, in a large bowl, beat eggs then add granulated sugar and lemon juice. Add in 1/4 cup flour and baking powder and mix well with whisk. Pour over baked crust and bake at 350 for 25 min. While hot, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

I used this Krusteaz mix for the cookies,,,

I added cream cheese frosting and pink sprinkles.

I boxed up some lemon bars and cookies for my mom and aunt to take home...

I had a great Mother's Day. I even got to go on a little shopping spree and picked up a few clothing items. Here are a few of my treats. :)

Do y'all see that perfume up there? It's called "Pink Sugar" and I've wanted to try it for a long time. It literally smells like cotton candy, which I'm very fond of. ;) I love it! (yes, I'm 12)

If you decide to try it, here's a tip..The big size I got (3.4 oz) is $60 at Ulta, but I got it on Groupon for $24.99. I just checked and it's still that price. Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Backyard Blooms

The lighting was just right yesterday afternoon, so I stepped outside and snapped a few quick pics of my backyard blooms...

Bottlebrush trees and Blue Plumbago

Pink Turk's Cap

Red Turk's cap (the wind was blowing and my flowers kept getting out of focus, so I finally gave up and snapped this one anyway)

Knockout rose

And a variety of Lantana...

My little Shrimp plant is even making a come back...

This purple Society Garlic is so easy to grow and it loves the sun...

Not sure what these orange blooms are, but they show off all summer long...

My Vitex trees are this close to blooming. I'll share a few pics when they make their appearance. They put on quite the show. :)

What's blooming in your neck of the woods?
