Just a Bunch of Random Things

I have a bunch of random things to share today. First off, I texted this pic to my boys the other day with the caption "A good southern gentleman always knows the proper way to set a table. Keep this on your phone in case of emergency." Hee hee!

It's true though, you always want to know the proper place for things if you're ever asked to help set a formal table. :)

Have y'all tried this hairspray?

Freeze It Original Freeze

It's the best. Major hold without being sticky.

I'm on the hunt for some winter boots. I want a plain brown knee high boot, but can't seem to find any I like. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

On the subject of shoes, have y'all heard of the shop "Call It Spring?" They have really neat shoes for women and men. I just got my boys these shoes...

They needed something they could wear with khakis for a dressier look, but also with jeans or shorts. These are exactly what we were looking for. Very versatile. Here's the Call It Spring website:

Here's a quick medicine trick from when my boys were little. You know when you're giving your child liquid medicine and you measure it out in that plastic cup it comes with? Well, I would always measure it out, then my kids would drink from that cup, then I would have to wash it really well so the germs wouldn't stick and it would be clean for the next person who took a dose.

Well, then I figured out it was much easier to first measure it out in the cup it comes with (always use the measuring cup that comes with the medicine) then I would pour it into a paper cup to administer it to my kids. That way, they could drink it and throw away the paper cup and I would only have to rinse the measuring cup and it was good to go for the next use.

I still use this trick when we're taking liquid medicine. Actually, that medicine in the pic above is for kids, but it works so well, we all still use it (just in bigger doses) Lol!

And one last thing. Do you ever worry about buying a used car because you're not sure if it has any recalls on it? This website is so useful...

Just click on "vehicle shoppers" at the top and it'll bring you to this page...

From there, click on "search for recalls by VIN." You just put in the VIN (vehicle identification number) to quickly learn if a specific vehicle HAS NOT been repaired as part of a safety recall in the last 15 years. Even if you're not buying a used car, you can put in the VIN of the current car you're driving to find out if there are any recalls you missed.

And that's all the PSA's I've got for today. Ha! Y'all have a good week!

  1. Good info there, and YES YES YES....everyone should always know how to set a table!!! I have even taught classes for our employees and scholars...etiquette classes too!!
Thank you for the hairspray hint...I have brillo hair, so it's nice to know there is something out there that I can use!

  2. Lots of great tips here. One of the things we did when the girls were younger was that if they stayed more than one night we would have a 'fancy dinner' the second night and set the table in a proper manner. It was something we all looked forward to and I would give the girls lessons on how to 'eat' their food in correct order and what utensil to use for which course.

Don't know that hair spray-but I don't use any anymore--I use a hair sheen product which helps with my straightened hair.

Cute shoes and smart idea on the VIN # for autos.

Hope you have a great weekend. xo Diana

  5. some great tips here! so many people dont know about proper place settings any more....there is so little etiquette anywhere anymore---so sad to see. I liked things more formal, or at least just better manners! so few have manners anymore.

  6. When my kids were growing up, we had formal sit down dinners with table linens, crystal, candles, etc. Everyone dressed up too! Of course, the kids hated it but they really appreciated "having the knowledge" when they were young adults. It's sad that there seems to be a lack of social graces these days.

I've tried that hair spray but it doesn't work well on my hair. :/ Great price!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  9. Your tips are great, Lisa. Love the text to your sons...they were probably shocked that there really is a plan behind a table setting! I know mine would be. And I have to look for this hairspray. I use Moroccan Oil but it's very light and I like that but it doesn't last. For a tight hold I use Frizz Ease and that is like shellac! lol! Love tips!

    Happy Weekend!

  10. You always share the best tips on your blog! I have never heard of that shoe store before. That may be a store local to you? That's a good tip on the medicine cup. I always just gave the cup to drink from and had to wash it out each time too. Now that my youngest can swallow a pill, we rarely use them anymore though. The table setting format is certainly helpful. I doubt my kids would ever use it though. Everything is so casual these days. It's certainly good to keep old traditions alive though.

  11. Your randomness is always so much fun, Lisa! When my kids were young, we sat together every night for dinner, and they had to set the table. I had made them a "cheater card" so they knew just where to place each item on the table. To offset the more formal routine, about once-a-month we would do "crazy utensil" night...the kiddos got to choose items from the kitchen utensil drawer in place of regular silverware. It was really fun to see Dad trying to eat with a spatula or Mom using a soup ladle....knives were off-limits!

Good idea about medicine in the paper cup, even for adults!

Hope you are having a great week!

  12. Love these posts, Lisa! I wonder if Spring is a Canadian website? It's been in our malls up here for years and we order from them all the time. Seriously, I bet the UPS guy knows our house from memory now!! That meds tip is awesome! I hate washing those little cups!
