No Sew Kitchen Curtains

I was getting really tired of the valances in my kitchen. I wanted a lighter, brighter look so I decided to try my hand at making curtains. First I'll go ahead and show you some "after" pics with the new curtains. (all pics enlarge when clicked)

I really love them! Even my hubby said "Wow, I can't believe what a difference it makes!"

Just to refresh your memory, here's what the windows looked like before:

Here's what it looked like after I removed the valances and patched up the holes where the hardware was:

Sorry about the flash...I just couldn't get a decent pic in here. I actually kind of liked them like this and lived with them this way for a few days.

Here's what I used for this project:

I love this fabric! I'm really loving the new matching planter too. :)

Heat n Bond...love this stuff! Most of you know I don't sew. Like, not even a little. :) I love that I could "make" curtains without touching a sewing machine! We basically cut the fabric to length and "hemmed" all four sides with this stuff using the iron.

I bought these rods at Big Lots. Love that place! The big rod was only $8 and the small ones were only $6! I didn't get a pic of the curtain clips, but I got them at Joann's. :)

Here are a few more "afters"

Here's a close up of the fabric. I love the grey and white.

Here's a breakdown of the cost:

Fabric: $8.99/yard for 8 1/2 yards. I used a coupon and got it for $45
Heat N Bond: $2.99 each and it took 4 rolls = $12
Big curtain rod: $8
Small curtain rod (2 of them) at $6 each =$12
Curtain clips $10.99 (we needed 3 sets and only used a coupon on two of them) =$24
Grand total: $101 Not bad for a whole new look. :)

Of course, now I've decided I need to recover my barstools in the kitchen. :) I put a swatch of the curtain fabric in my purse so I'd have it with me when I look for coordinating fabric for the barstools. This will probably amuse you, but when I saw the fabric swatch in my purse the other day, it really made me feel like a "real" seamstress. LOL! I can't even sew on a button, and now here I am carrying around fabric swatches in my purse like I know what I'm doing. Ha!

If you missed my post on how I "made" curtains for my living room for only $5, click HERE and to see more pics of my house, just click on "Home Tour" under the labels on the right side of my blog. :)

So, that's the curtain transformation. What do you think? Do you like it this way, or did you like the valances better?

Edited to add: The name of the duck cloth fabric I used is "Abigail Flamingo Gray" from Hobby Lobby.

Hope y'all have a great day!

~Lisa

  1. I adore your new curtains! You sew like me.....heat bond. LOL! They look beautiful against your wall color. I think they really updated your kitchen. I prefer long curtains over valances too. I kind of think valances are dated now. You're on a roll!

  4. The new drapes looks fantastic, Lisa! They really add a finishing touch to your room. I can't tell, are they black and white or kind of a charcoal gray and white? It's very professional to carry around fabric swatches in your purse -- no different than carrying paint chips; so, good for you!

  10. Mac, I am a sewer and I think you are so clever to use the tape to complete the Drapes. A great tip for those that do not think they can attempt this task. Great job and they look great. Love the print and color. thanks for sharing your ideas.

    1. Thank you so much! I'm very intimidated by sewing machines. LOL! I was so glad I found a way to "make" these. I really should learn to sew one day. Maybe when my kids are all out of school and I have time, I'll learn. Then I can make things for my future grandbabies! :)
